First off, we needed to find a 900 Monster with the 'good' 900 engine - the ones that came in all '91 to '97 900 SS and SL bikes, but were also used in the 900 Monster up to late 1996. Engine number 037727 to be exact. (They also came with the '98/'99 900 Monster Special).
The engine in the Monster from engine number 037728 came with 750 cams and valves. Actually according to Chris (CA-Cycleworks) that's not strictly true, they were a weird hybrid that's like half 900 carby and half 750 cam. Whatever, these valves are smaller and the cams have a lower lift. They're rumoured to be at least 5bhp down on the original versions.
In August last year we found what we were looking for. A 1996 M900, in great condition with full history and best of all, falling just a couple of hundred engine numbers before the change over to the 750 heads.
